The Wine Guy's Wine Club

We have a lot of wine in our cellar, and we can’t (at the moment) serve it to you in our dining room. Peter Nelson, our wine director, has chosen a reasonably-priced selection of wines that have been popular—because they are so darn delicious. Additionally, Peter will also offer occasional “cellar selections,” wines from older vintages that he has kept hidden away. This time around, it is a vertical from one of Sicily’s most cherished winemakers, Arianna Occhipinti.

Special Vertical

Arianna Occhipinti is described (often) as one of Sicily’s greatest winemakers. Considering the competition, including her uncle, Giusto Occhipinti of COS, that is quite a statement. Indeed, it was her uncle who introduced her to the world of wine. In 1998 he invited her to help him out at Vinitaly, the great Italian wine show. Arianna was 16 at the time and knew nothing about wine, but the experience was such that she decided to study viticulture and oenology in university. What she learned was very much in opposition to what she experienced at COS, and when her family purchased a farm with one hecatare of vineyards, she decided that she, too, would pursue the production of minimally interventionist wine. The rest, as they, is history.

Our vertical features Vittoria’s signature grape, Frapatto. A versatile variety, it is used to produce many styles of wine. Sometimes fruity and fun, sometimes more serious, crafted with the potential to age in bottle. Arianna’s Frappato is that kind of wine, developing nuances of flavor and complexity comparable to the greatest wines of Italy.
